Learn why the Perennial Plant Association named Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' Perennial Plant of the Year for 2009. An ornamental Japanese Hakone grass worth growing.

Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ is one of the few ornamental grasses that tolerate part shade gardens. It is shorter, as tall as it is wide, when fully grown. Although this ornamental grass, like prairie grasses, can be grown in dry soil, it is a Japanese native with qualities that will add to a landscaped garden. Voted by the Perennial Plant Association for 2009, it is a reliable perennial to put on any gardener’s list.

Low Maintenance Aureola

Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ prefers growing in rich acid soils that are moist and well draining. It tolerates morning sun, as well as dryer soils but in hot climates needs part shade. In northern regions more sun is required to maintain the golden color.

This slow growing plant is 18” – 24” tall and wide when full size. These characteristics make it useful for container gardens or small planting beds.

Because H. ‘Aureola’ requires less frequent dividing and has few insect or disease problems, it is considered a low maintenance plant. The leaves should be cut back in late winter or early spring. The plant is deer resistant.

Ideas for Hakonechloa Macra Aureola

This grass does have small flower spikes that bloom late summer through middle of fall; however, it is the foliage appearance that the plant is appreciated for. The pink and red shades of H. ‘Aureola’ are an added value to the garden in autumn.

Like any ornamental grass, Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ adds movement to a garden when planted on a windy site. It can lighten up a planting bed with dark leaved plants such as Cimicifuga or Tiarellas. Blue leaved Hostas will contrast well against the golden colors of H. 'Aureola.' Purple leaved Heucheras are another good choice.

As a container garden plant, it will cascade over the edges or in planting beds onto sidewalks creating a weeping effect. Aureola will be valued in Japanese gardens where the water-falling effect is desired.

Origins of Hakonechloa Macra

The Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola' is a short ornamental grass which cascades downward reminding some gardeners of miniature bamboo. Referred to as Japanese Hakone grass, it is native to the mountain regions of Honshu Island, Japan.

More Perennial Plant Association Winners

Members of the Perennial Plant Association vote each year for the best perennial. It is not a popularity contest; rather a vote is taken for the most reliably grown perennial plant.

Winners are not new on the plant nursery market, but have been quietly growing in gardens across the United States. Other perennial plants include Helleborus x hybridus for 2005 and Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum’ for 2004.
